Bottled Water
Bottled Water is not necessary to bring to the island. Please do NOT bring individual servings of bottled water to Dewees:
- it takes up space and energy on the ferry,
- it adds to the recycling that leaves the island, taking valuable space (and resources) to move it and run the barge
- it creates a trash hazard for seabirds and shorebirds everywhere
- lightweight plastic bottles can fly out of carts easily and become trash in our ecosystem
- it is no safer to drink than tap water
- as a global village, we need to rethink our use of single-use bottles
Dewees Island has a great water treatment facility. Our water is pumped from a deep well under the island, and goes through a complex filtration process using 21 different filters. It is perfectly safe to drink.
IF you don’t like the taste of the tap water, you still have another option. At the landings building, there is another location with a water dispenser that has gone through another whole round of reverse osmosis processing. You can take a water bottle or pitcher over there, fill it, and bring it back for use. It’s also a great place to fill up a water bottle when you are riding around the island and need a drink.
If you are still uncomfortable with island water, or you need to plan for emergencies, think about bringing a huge, reusable size of bottled water for your family to use– Whole Foods will refill them at a low cost, and you won’t contribute nearly the amount of trash to the environment.
