There’s a long string of swirly storms on the latest satellite images.  We recommend watching carefully and taking the necessary precautions.  There is an increased danger of rip currents because of the way the storms affect the shoreline.  Below are some links about rip currents and a brochure published by NOAA at USA.gov.  Redistribution is encouraged. On Dewees, rip currents are probably most likely around the sandbars and at the inlets.

The National Hurricane Center

The Category 2 storm may bring dangerous currents to the area into the first half of this week.

Tropical Storm Earl is nearing hurricane strength and is projected to swing closer to the Atlantic coast than Danielle. The dangerous current threat will likely continue through next weekend.

The storms can wash interesting things up on the beach.  It may be a great time to go shelling.

Just wanted to thank you both for the exceptional hospitality! We were all sorry we missed the cocktail hour on Friday! It slipped our minds and when we remembered it was too late!

We all had an absolutely WONDERFUL time. Everyone got tired of hearing me say, “this place is so awesome!” I promised them I would get out my thesaurus and come up with a new word for next year!

It has been difficult re acclimating to a world of phones, computers and tv’s!

Y’all are the greatest and once we have a date for our son’s wedding, we will be scheduling a return visit! It was the best vacation ever!

who is in charge here?

Here’s a fun way to give a whole new dimension to sand castles: add inhabitants. The other day, we happened to have a friend here who had brought some playmobil soldiers along for a day at the beach. You have to be willing to let them get sandy, but the upside is hours of extra fun.

A fun twist is to move all of the characters around when the kids go into the water. Ours might come back to find that the dog was in charge, get the giggles, and run back to the ocean, “so we can see what else happens while we are down there!”

Playmobil is easy to bring along, so long as you don’t bring the castles and ships. We’re big fans of knights and pirates at the beach. Here are some links to some that we think would be fun in a castle:

On Saturday mornings, the Farmers Market is in downtown Charleston, and it’s really fun as well- lots of kid friendly activities like face painting and live music.  (And theres a great funky African coffeeshop nearby on Vanderhorst St., called Kudu coffee)

A similar scene is on Tuesdays in Mount Pleasant at the Farmer’s Market.  It opens at 3:00 and goes till dusk, and both Mount Pleasant Seafood and a good roast-on-site barbecue are right there, along with a lady who makes the BEST pickles ever (also the most expensive) and artisan cheeses and pasta booths.  There’s even a crepe vendor, and usually there’s live music and face painting, etc.  It’s on Coleman Blvd– from Dewees, take Palm Blvd through the light and all the way to Sullivans Island, where you take the Ben Sawyer Bridge to Mount Pleasant.  Go about a mile, and the Farmers Market is on the left just past Moultrie Middle School. (Which is at 645 Coleman Blvd.) Here’s a link to a quick video slideshow of the Farmers Market.

From the Mt Pleasant Farmers Market, you are almost to Shem Creek, which is where the shrimp boats dock.  Again, there are some fun restaurants (it’s even possible to go by boat from Dewees) as well as at least four places to buy seafood basically right off the boat.  I like them all.  Here’s another blog post with details about Wando Shrimp Company, Raul’s, Magwood, and Mt Pleasant.  Right there, you can also connect with our first community supported fishery Abundant Seafood (featured in the NYTimes Magazine), where several owners belong to a group that splits shares of a fishing harvest.

The Impoundment will be lowered to prepare for repairs on the Rice Trunk . Repairs will be started on Tuesday, May 18th and will conclude by Thursday, May 20th.
