FAQ: Is Dewees Island a great place for a large family gathering?

Is Dewees Island a great place for a large family gathering?

That depends on what you mean by large. We are all in favor of large family events– we have them at our home sometimes. But we plan for WEEKS beforehand. Big groups are a challenge for the island: between communication of the island’s expectations, parking, grocery transportation, ferry space, golf cart transportation to the house, and dishes and linens and laundry, a large gathering requires a lot of advance planning. If you and your seven brothers and sisters are all planning on arriving with kids and having the kind of vacation where everyone does their own thing, going different directions, you need to look for a large home on the Isle of Palms.

Dewees Rentals is equipped to handle the maximum number of renters for a house that we have published and no more. In fact, if you overload the house, we will charge you $100 per night per person over the stated maximum occupancy. This is because when you have seventeen people sharing a space intended for 10, things go awry: golf carts aren’t meant to drive that many people, laundry and cleaning increases, there’s limited parking in the Dewees Marina on the Isle of Palms, wacky cousin Billy didn’t understand that throwing rocks at alligators is a federal offense, Aunt Mary didn’t understand that we don’t have a Bloomingdales, etc. When we process the ferry records, we will bill for extra overnight guests, EVEN IF they “accidentally” missed the last ferry off the island.
