How Far is the House from the Beach? We want to be right on the beach.

We understand this question, but it is not as applicable on Dewees as on other beaches. First of all, our oceanfront homes are set back pretty far from the ocean (good planning for natural processes like beach erosion.) You will still end up getting in a golf cart and driving to a beach access path. The ONLY time you are in a hurry on Dewees is when you are trying to catch a ferry, and proximity to the ferry dock is a convenience not to be overlooked.

Once upon a time, we packed everything we might possibly want for a day at the beach– a cooler of drinks and food, chairs, an umbrella, boogie boards, floating rafts, a million beach toys, and towels. We loaded down the golf cart till we looked like the Clampets, and we took off for the five minute golf cart ride to the beach. And then we were there for an hour, and somebody needed a bathroom or ice cube, and we had to pack up all that stuff and schlepp it all home. Now we rarely even take a chair. When we are ready to switch activities, we just head home, eat lunch, and go back to the beach. Once in a while, (usually when a friend has come to visit) we park there with a beverage or two and some friends for hours… but we still head home for lunch and regrouping rather than trying to take everything we might possibly want.

A side note: Don’t set up camp on the beach and then abandon it for lunch or (gasp!) overnight… take it down and store your things in the gazebo at Ancient Dunes walkway. Leaving camp invites raccoons (and turtle team members) to ravage your structure, confiscate any fresh baked cookies and alcoholic beverages, and dump your stuff unceremoniously on a boardwalk. Folks take the “pristine beach” thing seriously here. Also, the tide may carry all your stuff away.
